The loss of Saint Helena School in Helena Montana This grand structure was demolished for 13 added parking spaces and budgetary concerns by the Diocese of Helena in 2008. The structure nicked Old Dixie by many area residents was a Grand Old Dame of Helena with architecture reminiscent of The big southern plantation houses. I went with several inspection crews and architects to see the damage and desolation of the structure that sat empty and cold for decades and grudgingly agreed with the outcome of the sad state of affairs she had degraded to. The foundations had begun a sickening, dangerous creep inward causing the structure above to buckle and shift. Proper water controls, Iron and Concrete would have secured this but many thought that funds diverted to the School would take from the overall upkeep of the Cathedral, they may be right but what a loss, what a shame. An estimated 97 percent of this building went to the landfill, any major stone pieces were salvaged for reuse on the cathedral but for the most part she met a very sad and lonely end. Help preserve the past and get active in preservation in your local community, its simple and one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever have.
